Camden was about three years old when she started experiencing growing pains in her legs. She would wake up and cry because they would hurt so bad. I hated seeing her in pain but I really didn’t want to give over the counter meds so I did what any good momma would do…I consulted Google. lol I researched individual essential oils and read tons of anecdotal stories and finally decided on a combo that I felt comfortable with. Let me tell ya, this stuff works! If she woke up in pain I would rub a little bit on her leg and she would drift off to sleep within two minutes. I’m serious! So much better than waiting 30 minutes for acetaminophen or ibuprofen to kick in (not to mention all of the other reasons I stay away from those unless absolutely necessary).
There are three important things to remember with this recipe:
- Use good quality essential oils! I highly recommend Young Living because I feel very confident with their Seed to Seal guarantee. I would personally never use oils from the grocery stores or Amazon. You never know what it has been adulterated with, even if it says 100% pure.
- Use organic coconut oil. This cream is being rubbed onto your skin. Our skin is our largest organ and whatever is put on it, is put in it.
- Use a glass jar! Some oils have been known to break down plastic. Besides, plastic is full of chemicals that can leach into your cream. I save mason jars for this very reason!
First thing you do is whip the coconut oil. Coconut oil is pretty cool because it can be both a solid or a liquid, depending on the temperature. In this recipe you need to start with it solid. You can whip it up with a fork, like I did, or use a mixer to do it. If you use a mixer it’ll get really big and fluffy! I was lazy so I just mixed it up real quick with a fork. Super easy, took one minute, if that.
Once it’s whipped you just add your oils. You can actually use different oil combos if you’re looking for different benefits but for this I used Valor, Peppermint, PanAway, and Lemongrass. These four oils together are amazing! (The coconut oil is used as a carrier and also to help it spread easily on larger areas.) After you’ve put all of the oils in just stir it up again. Pour it into a glass jar and you’re done. That’s it. Piece of cake, right?! You can store it in a cabinet or out on a counter. If it’s cold and the mix solidifies it’ll soften and melt as you rub it in. If it’s hot and it starts liquefying you can stick it in the fridge.
We use this cream for all kinds of things…tense shoulders, sore muscles, growing pains, headaches, aching feet, painful joints. It’s definitely a must have in our natural remedies arsenal. (Also, my kid is a nut. She looooves eating straight coconut oil and was ridiculously excited when I told her she could eat the leftover coconut oil from the measuring cup. lol)
