What do you get when you cross good food and good music with animals and games and rides? You get a whole lot of fun, that’s what! We went to the Texas Crawfish and Music Festival in Old Town Spring and let me tell you, it was a great time. Every person in our family enjoyed it, from the youngest to the oldest. It was so much fun that not one person complained about the heat and it was hot, y’all! This year marked the 32nd year of the festival but it was our first time attending. It will definitely become a yearly event for us. You’ll find crawfish festivals all over Houston in late spring but this one was excellent because it had the three E’s: eats, entertainment, and excitement! (Get ready for picture overload!)
Crawfish is a THING down here, y’all. You can buy it by the pound or by the bucket. You’ll need lots of paper towels and something to drink because it’s messy and it’s spicy as all get out! Camden loves crawfish and finally figured out how to twist the heads away from the tails. She made quick work of it and saved only a couple for her daddy. Cade and Keatyn stuck with their tried and true chicken fingers and fries, Jeff had a Philly cheesesteak sandwich and I had chicken on a stick. I had the hardest time deciding between that and either a bbq sandwich or frito pie. There was the cutest desert booth, too. I wanted to shrink it down and take it home with me. Haha! Cade used his tokens to get a cherry snow cone and ended up with a brain freeze. 🙂
I have a thing for music. I love it all. I listen to music every single day and feel like life would be so very sad without it. It’s safe to say I’m a music lover. Give me sunshine and live music, though…and I’m in Heaven! This festival had two stages. The main stage had country musicians. We hung out and listened to The Jack Nelson Band for a few minutes. He sang a country version of Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice” which was fun. Then we headed over to the second stage to listen to some Zydeco music while we ate. Have you listened to Zydeco before? It’s the kind of music that will get you up and dancing before you know it. You can’t sit still when you listen to it. Even Keatyn was bouncing in her chair!
Cade didn’t dance but I’m pretty sure the music made him happy because he actually smiled for a picture! lol
Anyone else a sucker for carnival rides and games? We are. Those little stuffed animals you win are like gold to my kids! We usually play the basketball games and the one where you throw darts at the balloons. Ring toss is where I draw the line, though…no way I want my kids to win a live goldfish! lol Keatyn rode on her first ever roller coaster and she absolutely loved it. We actually rode twice and she grinned and giggled the entire time. I think I have a daredevil in the making!
Want to know what all three of my kids loved the most? The animals! There was a small petting zoo with little goats and a llama and pony rides as well as a camel ride and an alligator pool. The kids spent a good 30 minutes in that pool just walking around picking up alligators and petting a huge snake. I’m not too much of a fan of alligators and snakes, to be honest with you, but there’s something about watching your children experience something “cool” for the first time. That spark of joy in their eyes makes everything worth it.
In one word: excellent
There’s so much more that I didn’t get photos of…vendor booths, quaint shops lining the street, people everywhere. It was truly a fun-filled family day and we will absolutely make this an annual Baxter family outing. Mark your 2019 calendars now for next April so that you don’t miss it next year. We’ll see you there!
